Veterans and active duty

Start with the VA and 988. Then decide whether a civilian stay is even the next step.

Big civilian systems advertise veteran tracks. Some are VA Community Care providers. This site is not the VA, not a community-care broker, and not a placement desk. The public starting points are still VA substance-use care, Vet Centers, and the Veterans Crisis Line at 988, then 1.

If a civilian inpatient program is in play, ask whether they accept VA Community Care or TRICARE, whether anyone on staff has worn a uniform, and whether PTSD work is a real track or a page on the website. DD-214 status does not make a program competent. A program that will not name its license will not become competent because it hangs a flag.

Family: you can call the VA and 988 without the veteran in the room. You cannot force a program to admit someone who refuses assessment.

Educational only. Not a VA clinic and not a placement service.
