Mining and extraction
The highest heavy-alcohol rate in the federal industry table.
SAMHSA put mining at 17.5% past-month heavy alcohol use among full-time workers aged 18โ64 โ the top of that 2008โ2012 table. NIOSH has since been explicit that mine workers also carry high rates of opioid use, overdose, and suicide relative to most other industries, with injury and strain as the on-ramp.
Remote sites, rotating shifts, and a culture that treats pain as part of the wage make a three-week stay look impossible from camp. The clinical questions are still the same: is withdrawal medical, is home safe, has outpatient already failed. Add one more: who holds the job if the person is not on the next mantrip.
