The ABA already measured this. The assistance program is the first call.
The 2016 ABA Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs / Hazelden Betty Ford study in the Journal of Addiction Medicine surveyed 12,825 licensed, employed attorneys. 20.6% screened as problematic drinkers on AUDIT. Rates were higher in men and in the first ten years of practice. Depression (28%) and anxiety (19%) traveled with the drinking more often than the profession likes to admit.
Every state has a Lawyer Assistance Program. CoLAP at the ABA keeps the map. A LAP is not an inpatient facility. It is how many lawyers get assessed without the first call being an out-of-state admissions desk. Ask any residential program whether they have treated people with an active bar number and whether they will coordinate with the LAP instead of improvising around it.
