What a utilization review call is during a stay
Utilization review is the payer asking the campus whether more residential days are still medically necessary. It is a scheduled check, not a surprise eviction by this website. Family can ask for the next review date and whether a written result exists. This page explains the call. It is not a billing desk and not a placement service.

How this differs from prior authorization
Prior authorization is often the first block of days. Concurrent or utilization review is the later check that those days — or more days — still match the plan’s rules. Start date and day count live on a different page: prior-auth calendar. A verification snapshot is still not a payment promise: VOB is not a guarantee.
Questions family can ask
- When is the next review, and who on campus owns that call?
- Were more days authorized, denied, or stepped down to a lower level?
- Is there a written notice the member can appeal?
- Does staff need a signed release to tell family anything? See HIPAA and family authorization.
Ask on the facility-owned number and, separately, on the number on the insurance card. Script for that second call: insurer call script.
If days are denied
A denial is a plan decision, not a clinical discharge order from this site. Ask the campus what level they recommend next and whether a written aftercare sheet exists. Look other licensed programs up on FindTreatment.gov. This site does not argue the claim.
What this page does not do
It does not run utilization review. It does not list facilities. Confirm dates with the licensed campus and the payer.
