Step-down after residential: PHP, IOP, and office care

Residential care is one level on a continuum. Step-down means the next intensity — often partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, or office visits — with a dated first appointment and a phone that belongs to that clinic. A verbal “we will set something up” is not a step-down. This page is not an assessment and not a placement service.

Name the next level

Ask the campus which level they mean. Plain-language map: ASAM levels of care. Compare live-in versus commute: residential or outpatient. Put the next slot on the written aftercare plan.

Housing is not automatically treatment

A sober-living house can be useful and still not be licensed treatment. Ask whether the next program is a clinical level of care or a residence. Confirm licenses on FindTreatment.gov and the state list — not a brochure. Walkthrough: license lookup.

If the payer steps the person down

A utilization decision can change the authorized level before the family expected. That call is explained here: utilization review. A denial is not an order from this site.

What this page does not do

It does not assign an ASAM level. It does not list IOP shops or sober-living beds. Look programs up on FindTreatment.gov and the state directory.
