School notes when a parent is in treatment
A school usually needs who may pick up the child and whether a parent will be absent from a conference. It does not need a diagnosis. This page is a question list for the household. It is not a school filing service and not therapy.

What the office often needs
- The name already on the pickup list, and whether that list should add another adult.
- A short absence note for the parent if a conference will be missed. Leave the clinical reason off unless the family chooses to share it.
- Age-sized words at home. See what to tell a child at home.
What a school counselor is not
A school counselor is not a residential program and not an aftercare slot. If the child is in danger, call 911. For a mental-health crisis, call 988. Treatment information for the adult is SAMHSA 1-800-662-HELP. See 988, 911, and SAMHSA.
What this page does not do
It does not write excuse letters or contact schools. Campus visiting rules, if a child may visit, come from the program's written sheet. See visiting policy.
