What to pack for a residential rehab stay

Pack for a named, licensed campus — not for a brand. Photo ID, insurance if you have it, seven days of clothes, and prescriptions in the original bottles cover most first weeks. Call the facility-owned number and ask for the written packing sheet. That sheet wins over this one.

Papers first

Clothes for about a week

Toiletries that usually pass

Medications

Bring every current prescription in the original labeled bottle. Staff will reconcile what you take with what they can store. Do not hide a controlled substance in a toiletry bag. Ask, in writing, who administers medicine overnight and what happens if withdrawal worsens. Context: detox and inpatient.

What most campuses will not let through

What a family can hold instead

Leave a copy of the ID, the insurance card, and the license-at-address notes with one person who is not traveling. That person should also have SAMHSA 1-800-662-HELP and FindTreatment.gov. A sibling text that is not a referral lives in the copy-link packet.

If you do not have a named campus yet

Do not pack a suitcase for a sales hold. Confirm the legal name and sleep address, look the license up, then pack. Timing: 20 minutes vs a week. If tonight is unsafe, call 911. Otherwise use SAMHSA and the state locator pages.

What this page does not do

It does not replace a program’s written list. It does not invent a packing rule for a campus we have not named. It does not hold a bed. Default public tools remain SAMHSA 1-800-662-HELP and FindTreatment.gov. We do not operate a rented tracking number and we do not take payment per admission.
