Not sure residential treatment is the next step

If you are not sure a live-in stay is needed, start with safety, then intensity, then official locators. This page sorts what you already observed. It does not diagnose, hold a bed, or tell an insurer the stay is medically necessary. A licensed clinician still has to see the person.

Last reviewed 24 September 2026. Educational only. Not a diagnosis or a bed hold.

If tonight cannot wait

Overdose, seizure, chest pain, confusion that will not clear, or a person who cannot stay safe is 911. After emergency care, SAMHSA at 1-800-662-HELP and FindTreatment.gov remain the default public tools. This site does not take those calls.

What this page can and cannot do

It can help you write three observed facts and decide whether the next call is emergency medicine, a public locator, or a lower-intensity program. It cannot admit an adult who refuses assessment. It cannot convert doubt into a deposit. Compare intensity on residential or outpatient and what a day looks like on what inpatient is.

Signals that often point toward a live-in setting

None of these is a diagnosis. Together they are why families stop shopping for “a few hours a week” and look at residential or hospital inpatient care:

Signals that often point away from residential — for now

Landing on “not residential tonight” is a real answer. It is not a failure of the search.

Write the facts before anyone quotes a campus

Those notes travel better than a brochure. Keep them for the clinician and for the public line — not for a call center that “handles everything.”

Where to take the notes

Call SAMHSA 1-800-662-HELP if you need a live public referral. Open FindTreatment.gov and the matching state locator page. Confirm any residential address against the state license list before a deposit. How to ask those questions without becoming a sales lead is on how to choose. If you only have twenty minutes tonight, use 20 minutes vs a week.

If this is you

Doubt is allowed. You can ask for an assessment without wiring a week of room and board. You can also decide the honest next step is outpatient and still use the same official locators.

If this is someone you love

Your job on this page is not to fill an empty bed. It is to keep the person alive and to keep the file honest. Share the copy-link packet or the family brief instead of a facility you have not verified.
