Three public numbers

988, 911, and SAMHSA 1-800-662-HELP

Use 911 when life or safety is in immediate danger. Use 988 when the crisis is suicidal or psychiatric and you need a trained counselor now. Use SAMHSA 1-800-662-HELP when you need treatment information and a public referral path for substance use or mental health. The three numbers are not interchangeable. This site is not a fourth line.

Call 911 when

Say the address first. Say it is a possible overdose if that is what you see. Many states have Good Samaritan protections for people who call for an overdose; the protection is not a reason to delay the call. This page is not legal advice.

Call 988 when

988 is the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. It is staffed for people thinking about suicide, people in a mental-health crisis, and people sitting with them. You can call or text 988. Veterans can press 1 after dialing for the Veterans Crisis Line. 988 is not an ambulance and is not a treatment-admissions desk.

Call SAMHSA 1-800-662-HELP when

SAMHSA’s National Helpline (1-800-662-4357) is a free, confidential, 24/7 treatment-referral and information service for individuals and families facing mental and/or substance use disorders. It can point you to local resources. It does not send an ambulance. It is not this website’s phone.

Then look programs up on FindTreatment.gov and the state locator pages. Pre-filled search strings: FindTreatment.gov links.

A one-minute strip

  1. Unsafe body or scene → 911.
  2. Suicidal or psychiatric crisis, person is breathing → 988.
  3. Need treatment information, not an ambulance → SAMHSA 1-800-662-HELP, then FindTreatment.gov.
  4. Need to understand a live-in stay after the night is stable → this library, starting with 20 minutes vs a week and not sure residential.

What this site will not do

We do not staff a night desk. We do not run live chat that becomes intake. We do not rent a tracking number. We do not take payment per admission. If a page on this site ever feels like a substitute for 911, close it and dial.
